Editorial: Towards a future nursing education landscape
McNamara MS; Fealy G
Journal of Clinical Nusing, 22(13-14): 1789–1790

We have written previously about the challenges facing nursing education as it attempts to legitimate itself within higher education and health systems that are undergoing substantial change in response to government austerity measures in many countries, including Ireland (McNamara & Fealy 2011). We asked how the structure of academic nursing, as revealed through a social realist analysis of underlying structuring principles such as autonomy, critical mass/diversity and disciplinary distinctiveness (McNamara 2010), might constrain or facilitate its capacity to adapt to health and higher education reforms.
